After years of experience - in France, Europe and Quebec -, the concept of the Rural University has been condensed and enriched to meet the important changes taking place in the rural world.

Indeed, rural territories have become multi-functional and their potential places them in a the strategic position for local development policies. The Rural University makes it possible to unite the dynamic forces of the countryside: inhabitants, institutions and socio-economic actors. It is a focal point for men and women concerned by the rural world. The purpose is education and research, as well as capitalising on experiences, allowing those present to identify, compare and analyze local initiatives.

The Rural University contributes to the development and promotion of the rural world, so to improving the quality of life for its populations.

Three topics are proposed for the next European Rural University, which will take place on 7th, 8th and 9th September 2010 in Saint-Joseph :

- Europe at the service of the rural community and its inhabitants,
- Rural professions for women,
- Culture : between heritage and innovation.
