Topic 3 : Setting up a digital highway in mountain areas

- 7 December 2012 - Programme

Information and communication technologies have abolished distances, making people less isolated and facilitating the daily life of those living in remote areas.

Reunion Island has an exceptional relief, with zones stretching «from the seashore to the mountain peaks». In the mountain areas of the island, living conditions and access to services are difficult, making those who live there feel very isolated.

How can information and communication technologies allow them to have access to information and facilitate exchanges, setting up a true ‘mountain zone digital highway’, which will lead to development in isolated areas, hitherto excluded from the progress taking place in urban zones?

Three topics are proposed for the next European Rural University, which will take place on 7th, 8th and 9th September 2010 in Saint-Joseph :

- Europe at the service of the rural community and its inhabitants,
- Rural professions for women,
- Culture : between heritage and innovation.
